Having a groom's cake is a popular wedding trend--but where did this trend come from? The tradition of groom's cakes stems from when wedding favors were simply a slice of cake. This meant that most couples would have to order two types of cake; one to display, and one to slice and wrap up as favors. Some couples started to wonder why the second cake had to be hidden in the back instead of on display! If you are going to order an entire second cake, shouldn't it be fun and on display as well? Thus the tradition of the groom's cake was born!

Groom's cakes are special because they highlight the interests and personality of the groom- which is something that can be lost in a traditional wedding cake design. Groom's cakes can be personalized to fit the groom's personality in many different ways. These cakes can be designed to include the groom's favorite sports teams, hobbies, food, drinks, pets, etc. The possibilities are endless!

People say, "It's what is on the inside that counts" right? That saying definitely applies to one of the newer cake trends making an impact on weddings- naked cake! This trend is unique in the world of wedding cakes that are typically covered in frosting and fondant.  Naked cakes are tiered cakes that with unfrosted tiers. The beauty of a naked cake is in the simplicity and rustic feel. If you are a couple cake that appreciates minimalism, then the naked cake trend may be for you!

Due to the lack of outer frosting, cake designers increase the amount of filling between the exposed tiers. Doing so will keep the cake from getting too dry. The tiers are usually decorated with small frosting embellishments and/or flowers. Naked cakes can also be tinted with coloring, if you are not a fan of brown, bare cake.

You want your wedding cake to tie in nicely with your wedding theme. It is best to keep your wedding theme in mind during your cake consultation. Your wedding cake is another avenue to make your wedding theme cohesive, and depending on your theme, there are several paths you can take when designing your cake.  Your cake can be elaborate or simple, it is completely up to you! So what should you keep in mind when designing a cake for a contemporary themed wedding?

For a contemporary theme, the design possibilities are endless. Contemporary cakes usually have clean lines, so it may be best to ask for a fondant cake. Fondant gives cakes the appearance of being completely smooth with no imperfections-which is a very modern look. Buttercream is more forgiving,  and will not look as clean. Most contemporary cakes are fairly minimalistic, with subtle design touches--but you can also take a more bold look if you would like to. With contemporary cakes, your color scheme can be brought in with subtle touches; like flowers or small ribbons at the bottom of each tier--or the base of the fondant can be colored to match your theme. You have many options with contemporary cakes and your cake designer can help narrow your options to match your theme.

Texas weather is great for many reasons, but cake decor is not one of them! Summer is a busy season for outdoor weddings and events- but can wreak havoc on your beautiful cake. Even in the best conditions, cake decor is very susceptible to heat. Hot weather can melt buttercream, make fondant droop, and your colors bleed! If any of those things happen, it can really bring down the appearance of your cake. While you can't control temperature, there are some things that you need to take into account when planning your event on a hot/humid day.

Due to the possibility of disaster, many cake designers will avoid certain ingredients in the summer months. Designers may try to sway you to use buttercream or a fruit filling instead of a custard based cream filling because it can spoil in the heat. Certain types of frosting require refrigeration (cream cheese and whipped cream frostings) so cake designers try to avoid using them in outdoor summer events. Certain types of ganache are fragile in the heat as well, so you may want to steer clear of these. Designers will typically try to stick to buttercream and fondant decor, so keep that in mind when you're planning your outdoor cake design!

When planning your event, make sure the cake is out of direct sunlight--especially if you are having an outdoor event. Make sure to have your cake under a tent of some sort, to try and minimize melting. Try to keep your cake in the refrigerator for as long as possible before pulling it out. This will help preserve the cake for as long as possible. If you keep these few things in mind when planning your event and designing your cake, you should be in good shape for your summer event!

When deciding on a wedding cake design, it is best to keep your wedding theme in mind. You can use your wedding cake to bring in tasteful details from your theme to complete your overall wedding experience. Depending on your theme, there are many design routes that you can take with your wedding cake. You can keep it simple, and only add slight touches, or you can dive in head-first to your theme. So, what details should you consider when you are beginning to design your cake?

For a rustic theme, you have plenty of options for elegant, design touches that are cohesive with your theme. Cakes that follow to ta rustic theme are often decorated in buttercream, because fondant is considered to be a bit too clean. Buttercream cakes have grooves and imperfections that give the cake a more rustic feel. Buttercream is soft and can be textured with certain techniques. Added adornments such as flowers and foliage can complete the overall look. The color scheme possibilities are endless with rustic themed cakes, because you can choose to have a neutral base and include your colors in the additional decorations.
